Lars Steinmetz

Dr. Steinmetz is a scientist at the forefront of genomics research and technology development. He obtained his undergraduate degree with summa cum laude in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale University and a PhD degree in 2002 in genetics from Stanford University. At the age of 27, he opened his own research group at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), in parallel to continuing to lead a focused research team at the Stanford Genome Technology Center at Stanford University. Dr. Steinmetz is also co-coordinator of the Center for High-Throughput Functional Genomics at EMBL. Since 2009, he has been co-chairman of the department of Genome Biology at EMBL, which consists of over 100 scientists and 9 research groups. Dr. Steinmetz is a member of EMBL’s executive leadership team, and he has published more than 40 peer-reviewed papers, including 10 in top journals like Nature and Science. He has trained dozens of doctoral scientists and has one patent application. He is a consultant and member of the scientific advisory board of several leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.
